The Mangani Festival of Karaikal

In the coastal town of Karaikal, Puducherry, a centuries-old tradition transforms the streets into a vibrant sea of yellow and orange. The Mangani Festival (meaning Mango Festival) is an annual celebration dedicated to Karaikal Ammaiyar, one of the three prominent female saints of the 63 Nayanmars in Shaivism.

The highlight of this unique four-day festival is the grand procession of Lord Bikshadana (an avatar of Shiva). As the deity's chariot winds through the crowded streets, devotees standing on rooftops, balconies, and terraces throw ripe mangoes into the crowd. Thousands of people gather below, eagerly trying to catch the flying fruits, which are believed to bring blessings and prosperity.

Over the course of the festival, it is estimated that upwards of 30 tons of mangoes are showered upon the streets. It is a spectacle of joy, community, and devotion that remains largely unnoticed by international tourism, preserving its authentic, local essence.

The Living Root Bridges of Meghalaya

In the dense, rain-soaked valleys of Meghalaya, India, engineering is not done with concrete or steel, but with patience and living biology. The local Khasi and Jaintia tribes have perfected the art of growing "living root bridges" (Jingkieng Jri) from the aerial roots of the *Ficus elastica* (Indian rubber tree).

When a bridge is needed, the tribes place hollowed-out betel nut tree trunks across a river to guide the flexible rubber tree roots. Over 10 to 15 years, the roots grow across the stream, eventually taking root on the opposite bank and forming a sturdy walkway.

Over time, rather than decaying like wooden bridges, these living structures grow stronger. As the roots mature and intertwine with stones and dirt, they can easily support the weight of over 50 people at once and last for several centuries. They are a masterclass in regenerative, sustainable design.
